OF COURSE it is still worth the money to go see and bootleg and watch again and again!!! What some don’t realize is that Bob Dylan has worshipers and his every move has been catalogued as if he were a LIVING SHAKESPEARE. It is well earned. I mean, overboard. They have committed the memories of his career to memory. They must suspend their disbelief to stomach the BIOPIC.

IT IS NOT A DOCUMENTARY because IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ACCURATE

I’ve always had some Porco DNA in the Greenwich Village game. So I learned and understood more and more. Decades later, many scenes from Dylan’s biopic have turned info files in my brain.

If I were asked to write a 1000 word essay about Bob Dylan’s first years after-Minnesota, I could do it.

Dinky Town, Danny Kalb, Wisconsin, Fred, The Wha?, Terri Thal, Dave, Bruce, Amram, Pete Seeger, Yarrow, Happy, Gil, Delores, Mike Porco, Gerde’s Folk City, Big Joe Williams, Oscar Brand, Joan Báez, Suze, Charlie Rothschild, Arlo, Woody…I can estimate when their paths crossed. The one constant was that MIKE PORCO can always be pinned to a location: West4th and Mercer mostly. WOODY GUTHRIE. Same. Mainly a hospital room. They wound up with the same friends never meeting.

I scoured over info on Dylan and Folk City back when I committed to the Scene. I had been in-search-of MORE details about those hours spent in 1961 at Gerde’s with Suze and Mike. And my great-Uncle John Porco.

Some Bob fans will boycott A COMPLETE UNKNOWN because they WANT BOB HOW THEY WANT HIM!!!

James Mangold was FORCED to combine EVERYTHING into a New York minute. The story survived the choke hold. Dozens of major figures were left out. {Some ‘scholar Michael Gray wrote an encyclopedia on Bob Dylan and missed an entry on Mike Porco. now that’s a fucktard. Not Mangold}

I enjoyed the anticipation to see Grandpa as I watch on Christmas just as I did watching Rolling Thunder a Bob Dylan Story. Ya never know who front and center Mike might be used in the story.

Some others choose to fight over BOB. They don’t wan’t to share their 60 years of FOLLOWING him with 20-somethings.

Well, I got newz fer ya, this Manhattan kid Tim Chalamet just jumped in Bob’s clothes and FAKED it for the sake of recording history. There were no cameras rolling in the movie scenes. They MUST be made-up. Make believe. Hollywood. Make it what it ain’t. Timmy did an admirable job. Got guitar fingers now.

Very difficult to depict 5 years in 141minutes.

Suffice to say that Bob Dylan, like the super hero in a movie, has just the right quippy comeback in every scene. He doesn’t have a Bat-Mobile EQ but he goes everywhere helmetless on a Triumph motor bike. Yes, the guitar slung over his shoulder on a highway. It’s preposterous and it’s beautiful. Just how we want Bobby. It’s perfect it it’s own way.

For example:

Robert Shelton was in the movie.
He was standing there looking nebbishy IN FOLK CITY holding a scribe’s note pad while listening to Bob. This is theatre one O one.

In this theatre, The Times critic must be just standing there acting ‘scholarly’ as if he is the king maker.

Izzy Young once told me Shelton was born with a gin and tonic in his hand chasing married women. And Joan. And any teen, for that matter.

Everyone knows MIKE PORCO was the KINGMAKER because GERDE’S WAS THE…..

I was in the sauna today when conversation broke out over ‘the Bob Dylan movie’

“There’s a whole wild community about Dylan. Like DEADHEADS!!” he said.

“They live on bootlegs.”
