When PHIL OCHS arrived in the Village in 1962, ERIC ANDERSEN made sure he made the right connections.
As Andersen said in Phil’s docu-drama CHORDS OF FAME, “Phil, did you meet Paul Colby? Did you meet Sam Hood? Did you meet Dave Van Ronk? Did you meet Izzy Young? Did you go to Folk City and meet MIKE PORCO?”
MIKE PORCO was the DEAN of FOLK CITY🎼🎹🥁🪗🎸🪕🎻
Before musicians had social media to get the word out about their skill, they had to use connections with club owners. Mike Porco went above and beyond the call of duty to help young singer/songwriters get on the road and get their songs heard.
As my grandfather put it—-
“It makes me feel good knowing I helped somebody be somebody.”
Eric Andersen, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and a thousand others called Mike their friend. (Garfunkel, no so much) They WORKED TOGETHER at FOLK CITY in Porco’s assessment.
His contributions to the advancement of the music scene during those twenty years cannot be overstated. He will have his incredible story told ONCE AND FOR ALL in the Gerde’s Folk City Doc, POSITIVELY PORCO.
It’s ready for consumption. After 11 years…
COME AND GET IT!!!
