His one-time barmaid and waitress are still lauded in the Times FIFTY YEARS after making their savant artistic recordings๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐จ๐๐๐
A gift arrived at Maggie and Terreโs door a couple days ago. A THROWBACK NY TIMES ARTICLE was revived and it became a prompt for those who know, and others who didnโt know, to inspect the origins of these FOLK ROCK PIONEERS.

Paul Simon saw something in Maggie early. He saw Terre and Maggie Roche have command of their instrument. He saw the commitment to rehearsal.
If you inspect THE ROCHESโ which eventually included youngest sister SUZZY bringing up the rear and joining in the late 1970sโ-you will discover harmonies and skillful guitar playing that, IMO, has no comparison.
I will be risky in saying that if you want to be A DUO OR TRIO compared to them YOU GATTA BE GIRLS to compare. GATTA have a record deal in your early 20s and tour experience and YA GATTA have ALL (almost all) ORIGINAL LYRICS, MUSIC and MELODIES.
What popular group is similar?
Those melodies!!!!!! The a-game recordingsโฆWHO the hell thought of such intricate and quirky choirs???
I spoke to Maggie twice. Still have her landline (212) number even though she passed in 2017.
I met Terre in 2010 on 2.12 in Manhattan where the dial exchange is (212). Still see her from time to time and sheโs performed at a couple of my productions.
WHEN I LIVED IN MANHATTAN and we were younger people, I would call her for a guitar lesson out of the blue. She taught me the song โFace Down at Folk City.โ She wanted me to practice. I didnโt study between lessons. Poor student for shit like that then. Yet Iโve practiced since and am a serviceable player. (That means that I can make it through an open mic with a little practice.) Still no where close to a pro. They REALLY put in the work.
Their return on their investment for committing to their craft isโฆ being a hit in the Times fifty years later. Priceless.
