The World's Expert on the King of Clubs Wrote This Headline
'Experts' on New York City's Folk and Blues Revival have just a little brushing up to do since THE GERDE'S FOLK CITY DOC was published
Next time someone tells you they are an expert on the Washington Square Folk Revival of the 60s and 70s- ‘fucking scholars’ as Izzy Young used to call them- make sure you remind them how full of shit they are. Izzy was on the street with the music since he was 29. When he visited NYC in his 80s, he spent time on the street with me instead of hotel lobbies with ‘fucking scholars.’
I’m no expert on the Washington Square Revival, but I made my contribution by piling up, heaping and amassing EVERY LITTLE THING about the HUB, the HQ, The Living Room of the 1960s; GERDE’S FOLK CITY and THE KING OF CLUBS, MIKE PORCO.
If you are planning a project about the early days of Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs or José Feliciano, or clubs and cabarets in New York City, or the role of club owners, writers and critics during the formation of modern-day Rock, Roots and Blues, get 100% educated.
